As my life became increasingly lonely and dangerous I made an unlikely ally in Mariah Carey. During the space of a short TV spot she morphed from my arch nemesis to an unexpected parallel survivor. Her life slid at the same exact time mine did. I understood the need to go away and get better. I understood exhaustion and disorientation. I understood the terrors of both silence and loud noise. I now consider myself an extreme Mariah advocate.
